The International Youth Day program held on the 18th of August 2024 in Lagos brought together industry professionals, experts, and young individuals to discuss the role of technology in enhancing skills and contributing to sustainable development among Nigerian youths. Organized by UNESCO Youth Orientation for Development in collaboration with the Centre for Digital Humanities at the University of Lagos, the event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of responsible technology use and its impact on the future of the youth in Nigeria.
The program featured insightful discussions, interactive workshops, and engaging presentations that highlighted the potential of technology as a tool for empowerment and growth. Industry professionals emphasized the need for Nigerian youths to leverage technology responsibly to acquire new skills, foster innovation, and drive positive change in their communities. They underscored the importance of digital literacy, critical thinking, and ethical considerations in utilizing technology for personal and professional development.
In this event honorable guest were invited as Panelist this included Dr. Oludare Akinlaja, Ebuta Tambu, Joy Ogunlusi, Victor Okechukwu, and the moderator being Inkipi Victoria Amodu. During the program,the experts underscored the transformative power of technology while cautioning against its potential negative impacts if not used responsibly. They urged youths to view technology not only as a source of entertainment but as a force for good that can drive positive change in society. Key speakers, including Oludare Akinlaja, CEO of QAR&D Group, emphasized the educational benefits of technology and the importance of leveraging it to address the digital divide in Nigeria. Akinlaja stressed that effective use of technology as an enabler for education is crucial for rebuilding the nation and empowering young people to contribute meaningfully to development. Euriel Momah, director of programs for the Youth Orientation for Development, reiterated the organization’s commitment to promoting UNESCO programs and ideas among Nigerian youth. The theme of the program, ‘From Clicks to Progress: Youth Pathway for Sustainable Development,’ aimed to shape the youth’s perspectives on digital tools and encourage them to utilize technology for their future growth. Tunde Ope-Davies, director of the Center for Digital Humanities, highlighted the concept of digital humanities as a means to apply technology and computer science in humanities research, emphasizing its role in advancing knowledge and scholarship among young people.
Furthermore, the program highlighted the need for collaboration, mentorship, and networking among youths, industry professionals, and academic institutions to create a supportive ecosystem for technology-driven innovation and entrepreneurship. Participants were encouraged to seek guidance, seek feedback, and seek partnerships to maximize their potential and make a meaningful impact in the digital age.
