Applications are now open for the Microsoft Research Fellowship 2026, a program that supports outstanding researchers and academics working on projects that push the boundaries of technology and scientific understanding.

The fellowship provides opportunities for PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty members to collaborate directly with Microsoft Research teams on shared challenges and ideas that address global issues through innovation.

Fellowship Details

The fellowship is open to candidates from degree-granting universities in Africa, Australia & New Zealand, Canada, Europe, India, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the United States.

Funding Support

Each fellow receives a research stipend that also includes travel support for collaboration at Microsoft Research labs. The amounts vary by region:

  • Africa – $17,000
  • Australia & New Zealand – $17,000
  • Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico – $17,000
  • Canada – $47,000
  • Europe – $27,000
  • India – $17,000
  • Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan – $17,000
  • United States – $47,000

Eligibility

For PhD Students
Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD program at an accredited university and may submit proposals independently.

For Faculty Members
Professors, Assistant Professors, and Associate Professors may apply on their own or with a student collaborator. Both will be recognized as fellows if selected. Applicants must hold a terminal degree such as a PhD or DSc.

For Postdoctoral Researchers
Postdoctoral researchers may submit proposals individually but must include a letter of support from a faculty advisor or department chair confirming institutional backing.
